Bairei Hyakucho Gafu

A three volume set, Hyakuchō Gafu (Bairei's Album of 100 Birds) is touted as one of the most accurate depictions of birds from this period. Attention to detail was key in creating images as life-like as possible, with almost every painting being accurate enough to allow the subject to be properly identified. Not all of the birds presented in this work are native to Japan. Some, such as the parrot, were caged species brought to Japan by traders.  Bairei's use of extremely light inks to create depth is of note.
