Through Their Strokes

Hiroshige print

Hiroshige.jpg

This single Hiroshige print is notable not for its exacting detail, like some other pieces in this exhibit. Rather, Hiroshige creates a representation of these birds using a mixture of long, flowing strokes with short, choppy strokes. The long strokes define smooth edges, while the short choppy strokes flow together and give an impression of rough texture, such as the bellies of the birds, or their wing tips.
