Beauty of the Enpo Era
This print, done by Kiyochika Kobayashi, is a great example of 18th-19th century kabuki woodblock printing. Multiple scenes from the play are separated by artistic dividers, while a common character is placed in the forefront. The brushwork is relatively simple, using solid lines. The beauty of characters is implied in the smooth features of the faces, compared to the shaded features of the masculine samurai central to the print. Background colors are subdued, while the red of the kimono in the primary subject is vivid and striking.
